Wonderful New Book - Naturally Better - Endorsed by Deborra-Lee and Hugh Jackman...and yours truly...Enter our Comp to win a copy!

I met a totally inspirational lady online a while back. Her name is Kristen Morrison and she is the author of newly released book Naturally Better. Kristen has had some amazingly high profile people endorse her book - for nothing - as they think it is so good; including Deborra-Lee and Hugh Jackman and Janella Purcell - Nutritionist from Biggest Loser. I was privileged to also review her wonderful book. See below for more.

As my regular readers will know I am just as passionate about helping empower people to improve their Health via Natural means - due to the firsthand, profound results I have achieved this was - as I am about organizing.... the healthier you are physically and mentally the better you handle life's challenges including staying organized!!

For a chance to win one of two copies of 'Naturally Better' simply sign up to our newsletter and see the details in Issue 87.

Naturally Better Reviews:-

‘This book is an invaluable source for anyone wanting to tackle and conquer the myriad of challenges that our kids face. Kristen has listened to her heart and followed her instincts in a holistic manner, on how to heal and assist her son in achieving his personal best! This family’s journey reminds us that we have the power to be the masters of our destiny and we instinctively know that there is much we can do that is not necessarily the road most travelled.’Deborra-Lee & Hugh Jackman

‘Kristen has shown us that with caring, patience and determination anything is possible. In my clinic everyday I see the healing potential of medicinal herbs, nutrition and other natural therapies, but when it’s mixed with a mother’s love and a positive attitude, well, the result is the miracle that is Gryffin Morrison.’
Janella Purcell, Biggest Loser Nutritionist
www.janellapurcell.com

& the long version of mine :)

“I wish Kristen Morrison’s book, Naturally Better was around when my children were diagnosed with numerous food preservative /colouring allergies and intolerance's, as well as some mild learning difficulties several years ago. It was so daunting trying to find out what was ‘wrong’ and working out what course of action was best for them. We ended up going down the Natural route as well with profound results. This prompted me to think how many kids are out there with even mild behavioural and learning issues that could be resolved using these types of strategies.

Natural Health solutions are not rocket science when you look into it but we need to be empowered and encouraged to consider them and utilise them by mainstream Health Professionals. Kristen’s story is inspiring to say the least. I couldn’t put the book down. I learned a lot I had no idea about that I can also implement into our children’s lives.

…..In her book, Kristen explains in easy to understand language what desperately needs to be mainstream knowledge about what we can do for our children (and ourselves) for optimum health, to be able to reach our full potential. The information shared with the reader is essential to help you take a more proactive role in you and your families health and well being.
Through sharing her heartfelt and inspiring story Kristen’s book will save you hundreds of hours and will change countless lives. Make sure you are one of them.”

Tips to deal with a dis-organized partner

I caught up with two friends recently and we ended up discussing how different males and females are (in general of course!) when it comes to organization, thinking ahead and multi-tasking. The difference can often be stark and a source of great frustration.

There are ways to help avoid pitfalls in these areas, which I wrote an article about a while back. I thought it may be helpful to you if you are in a similar situation and have a dis-organized partner and don’t know how to get them to tackle/ keep on top of their own stuff - without world war three! Enjoy!

"10 Steps To Help You Deal With A Disorganized Partner.”
by Claire McFee

I have had numerous emails asking me for advice on what to do when you are organized but your other half isn't. Below are some tips on what you can do that may help if this is applicable to you and is driving you nuts. Please keep in mind that you can only change your own behaviour, not someone else's. Having said that remember that by altering your behaviour you may then help someone else react differently, thereby changing theirs.

1. Go in with a positive attitude - not with a negative one assuming the worst before you have even begun, because your partner will pick up on this. (review “How to get motivated and set goals”on ways to psyche yourself up for the challenge ahead.)

2. Lead by example and occasionally (& subtly) point out some of the changes you have made in your routine or the clutter you have tackled, and how much less stressed and how much better you feel finally dealing with it.

3. Initially keep up your own good work without expecting your partner to notice or even comment about it let alone miraculously do the same thing. Gradually ask for help.
For example ask them to go through that pile of papers of theirs on the kitchen table, (then move onto bigger jobs like the garage down the track. (Be prepared to help your partner go through their things with them and remember to help them be ruthless in the filing and/or binning of it all.)

4. Have your own "to do" list somewhere your partner can see it and over time start a separate one for them (don't make it overwhelmingly long or this may frighten them off!) The fridge is a good place to put this. Tick off the jobs for both of you as you go - (if your partner hasn't done theirs already.)

5. Write down a time-line for the jobs on your lists. Yours may be weekly but your partners may initially need to be monthly. If the jobs haven't been done within this time, it may highlight to them how much time has passed and how little has been done, which may help jog their memory to tackle the tasks sooner rather than later.

6. Be clear about your intentions and when you think the time is right, ask for your partners help. (Remember not to nag or you won't get anywhere!!) For example you could say- "I'm hoping to re-organize some of my things this weekend. Would you be able to help me go through some of your things at the same time? Then I'll know what I can take to the op shop and/or throw away of yours along with my stuff."

Happy Organizing

What would I do without my trusted to do List?!!?

The list of To Do’s we all have to tend to these days can boarder on ridiculous. Although it would be lovely not to need the good only paper based to do list, unless you are born with a photographic memory or similar it’s impossible to remember what needs to be done without one!!

Here’s a snap shot of a recent daily to-do list, which no doubt is similar to yours. We really do have to fit a lot into a day don’t we!!!

To do 1 : Get a card and present for daughters friend’s birthday
To do: 2 Get bday card for father in law –stamp/send
To do 3: Call Telstra
To do 4: Call Powercore
To do 5: Pay 12 bills for new house!
To do 6: Have friend over for bday lunch
To do 7: Edit eBook
To do 8: Liaise with website technical contractor to fix some website issues
To do 9: Call Naturopath –order homeopathics
To do 10: Arrange visit to vet for kittens
To do 11: arrange to borrow portable cat carrier from friend to transport said kittens 1 hr to closest vet!

Gosh it feels good to tick off things as you get them done though doesn’t it.

I honestly couldn’t cope without my To Do List/s. they give me clarity and direction and ease of mind, knowing I have written down what needs to be done, so I know I won’t forget. This frees up my mind up for other things and I’m sure you are the same. If not give a To Do List a go and notice the difference in brain fog lifting and energy levels rising. When I first came up with the idea for my organizer 10 years ago, I couldn’t believe the difference in both these areas. It was nothing short of astounding.

As Psychologist Molly Campbell said on A Current Affair about Organize Your Life:-

“Once you get started it's self-motivating…. as you start ticking off the things you have accomplished your energy starts to go up, and then you're off and running.."

So true.

Anyway back to my beloved to do list and what needs to be done next…

Organizing a good Homework routine with your kids

Organizing a good homework routine with your kids

With the two kids and the usual afterschool sports and recreation (my 10 yo had surfing lessons at the local beach for a term recently–how lucky is that!), sometimes homework gets pushed to the side.

If you’ve got a daughter anything like mine - who is very good as distracting/changing the subject and finding excuses to do anything but homework, this can lead to leaving homework till too late and feeling very stressed out trying to get the homework done in time. Emma has partly developed these strategies of avoiding homework due to a reading problem she has –(similar to dyslexia) which, over the years, has led to a dislike of normal learning methods in general. You have to come round the ‘back door’ with Emma to get her to have a go – something apparently my parents tell me they had to do with me in many ways (doh!).

With my husband having been working 12/13 hour days building our house, this has meant more household jobs have fallen to me that we would normally share, so fitting in adequate time to do homework together is more challenging. I have to be strict (ie; organized!) about doing it at certain times and not letting Emma get out of it, but not be too strict or risk a toxic learning environment. It hasn’t been easy I can tell you.

I don’t know about you – if you have a child/ren who avoid homework like the plague too) but there’s quite an art to finding the right balance between being a fun to be around mum and being a nagging, not so nice to be around mum when it comes to homework routines and expectations. Emma has had a lot of extra ‘homework’ with programs she has done to help her get ahead so by the time school homework comes around she’s really over it. Trying to ‘teach’ your own child can be challenging to say the least. I have to pick my times and be very careful not to correct everything she does incorrectly or this can be taken as criticism to a child who is sensitive about ALWAYS being wrong. What I have found that works quite well on those days when the standard homework is just not going to get done, is playing a game such as hangman or monopoly. This give Emma an opportunity to practice her reading and spelling in a more indirect way.

Have you experienced this issue? If so what strategies have you used to work around your children’s homework issues? What organizing tips do you have to share?

Treasure each moment :- None of us know how long we or our loved ones have

We are sadly off to a funeral for a very young boy who died of a terminal illness. I have never been to a funeral for a someone so young and can not imagine how devastated his family are.

Remember to treasure your family and friends and not take each other for granted as we can sometimes do when we get to busy and wrapped up in our own lives.

Life is short and unexpected, sad things sometimes happen. Treasure each moment.....

We are finally in our new House - yippee!

Well we officially moved into our new house today. I feel like I've been in a time warp for the past few weeks in particular. Being the fourth move in four years you'd think moving house would be a breeze but it has been the biggest and most challenging by far. Worth it though!!

Must give my hubby a huge pat on the back for building it from scratch and doing such an amazing job - especially under a lot of 'pressure' at various stages of the job - We made it to this point fully intact though. Thanks NeePee!

I am soooo looking forward to getting back to a more normal/predictable work routine -after all it's my passion - and I have missed not being able to devote as much time as usual to it lately.

oh and I got a lovely surprise during the week - more on that next post. Off to rest my weary bones after much heavy lifting, cleaning and sorting!!

Bye for now.
Happy Organizing,

Organize Your Life Organizer Review

My Friends Jayne and Val over at Guilt Free Business Mother's have put together some lovely words to describe our Organize Your Life e- Organizer. If their words ring true with you, come visit our website and see what we are all about and how we Organize Your Life may be able to help you.

"Are you a list maker with great ideas about things you need to do?
I am. Trouble was, I would write the lists on bits of paper then forget where I'd 'filed' them. Now that's OK if it's the shopping list. But when the lists cover things you might only think about once a year, what then? Great ideas are often lost forever.
I do have a goal book. But my contact list wasn't easy to update. There were also some things about my husband (clothing sizes, preferences) that I would never seem to remember.
But Claire McFee, one of our favourite GFBM Collective experts, is helping me overcome all that with her oh-so-comprehensive Organize Your Life planning system.
Her e-organisers help you keep track of family, money, home and self. And it's that 'self' part that I wanted to mention today.

When I first started using it, I couldn't believe how comprehensive it way. Right down to listing what you want at your funeral! How sensible is that? And what a load it would take off your loved-ones! If you could do with a really comprehensive system, check out Organize Your Life.

Claire has been offering this system for a decade now so it's well tested. And the best thing for me is her advice: you don't have to do it all at once--but at least you know where to find it all and keep building on it!"

Thanks Gals. :)

Till next Time. Happy organizing.

Routine or No routine? Routine any day I say...well most days.

One of my favourite writers - Stephanie Dowrick, wrote a great piece in her Inner Life column in The Age Newspaper recently titled, "The bliss of a routine Life." Stephanie sums up things in such an eloquent but practical way - tying up all those loose ends about how our physical, mental and spiritual worlds can coexist together for the best results.

A lot of people confuse the goal to get organized with being anal and lacking in flexibility and spontaneity. I wholeheartedly disagree with this black and white assertion. The absolute majority of us who try to better Organize Our Lives, do so knowing our lives will never be perfect, nor do we want to be. We however know that making an effort to get organized, can make a huge difference to our satisfaction levels in our life / or our happiness quotient as others refer to it as.

Good organization and routines go hand in hand. In my view, just as much for most adults as it does for children. Stephanie's article mainly focused on the benefits of good routines for those with children, but I believe her ideas cover us all no matter what age. For those of you with children though, here is one few of my favourite quotes from Stephanie's article.

"It is incredibly helpful to parents, and soothing and stabilising for the child, to have predictable rhythms to most days' events." Dowrick goes on to say that although our modern busy lives seem to be at odds with this philosophy the two can go together. Albeit with a bit of pre-planning, organization and of course effort!

"It is understandable that parents should rate flexibility so highly. It's how we tend to live our adult lives, hurtling from one thing to another, multi-tasking madly and responding to what's most urgent, rather than what's most important...."

We can trick ourselves into thinking we are coping just fine with our incessantly busy lives but increasing stress levels; mental illness and stress related physical diseases tell us otherwise.

So it is in all our best interest, kids or no kids to take some time-out occasionally and to pre-plan your day, week etc and see if you can notice the difference in your happiness quotient at the same time.

The more satisfied you are with your life, the better able you are to want to get organized in the first place - as well as have the motivation to stay organized. It's all inter-related of course!

Happy Organizing.

Organize Your Life in the Media again - this time about Children and Pocket Money

I was asked to comment for Cheryl Crithcley's Herald Sun parenting Column again. This time on children and pocket money - titled "Cash or chaos?"

Coincidentally Kimberley Davies - x-Neighbours actor - was on the front cover of the Lift Out the article was in - who I was friends with at middle school - In fact we used to dress up as the characters from Anne of Green Gables and act our the story on her parents farm. I'm pleased to see how well she has done over the years. Kim comes from a lovely family -I actually had a crush on one of her brothers way back when. Ahh memories!

Social Analyst David Clarke was also quoted in the article saying "Chores are less of a priority now because kids spend so much time social networking, busy families no longer follow strict routines and life is a lot more ad hoc". Not that it's a good thing though!! He went on to say the "helping around the house is an important part of learning life skills, and pocket money also teaches about finances..."

Less bribing children to do chores and making it part of being in a family and being responsible for their things is important too.

For more tips on how to teach your child about money and when the best time is to start giving your child pocket money, read this article on our Organize Your Life Website.

Hitting a Wall? Siimon Reynolds explains how to avoid failure in any life area

The Age Sunday Life Magazine had a great article titled "Hitting the Wall" about routine; motivation; good habits; bad habits etc from an extract of Advertising Guru Siimon Reynolds book "Why people fail?"

In the article Siimon Reynolds touches on how, once enthusiasm for a new project goal wanes after the initial stages of execution the often drudgerous next steps make the goal hard to achieve unless you get into the habit of visualising your end goal to keep you motivated.

Habits are what help you achieve where others fail says Reynolds. The article goes onto to illustrate 3 Areas you can apply Rituals to that Reynolds believes make the 'difference' between success and failure.

No 1 ANTI PROCRASTINATION RITUAL
Basically writing your goals down and prioritising what needs to be done to achieve those goals.
This includes a to do list and spending at least ten mins on each task, having started the most important immediately.

No 2 INDUSTRY MASTERY RITUAL
This is for people who want to become experts in the field.
To do this, Reynolds suggests Reading an Industry related book daily as well as lesser time reading magazines and related blogs
Quarterly: Have a coffee with an Industry Expert
Yearly: Attend 2 conferences

No3 SOCIAL -LIFE IMPROVEMENT RITUAL

Again...Make a list of people you want to connect with.
Set a weekly target: book people in!
Make one call or send one email per day to keep on top of you social goals

So whether it is professional related or Personal getting clear by setting goals, being conscious of making new habits / rituals can be applied to any area of life. Give it a go and watch your life area be transformed...after all on 3 small steps per day equates to 1,000 steps yearly to help reach success.

As my favourite quote goes "The weakest pen is better than the strongest memory", so as Reynolds suggest Get it down on paper!!!!

Happy Organizing,

Moving House....Again! My House Moving Tips and Tricks

Well packing has begun in our household with a mini- pre- move to my parents holiday home before moving into our new home over the next couple of weeks. It’s not as bad as it sounds, in fact it is actually a good thing. How!!? You ask??

Well time is up on the rental we have been in, and as our house is not quite ready to move into, we are luckily able to stay in my parents beach house in the interim. It’s a beautiful new place and we are still able to move all our major stuff into our garage so there won’t be much double handling of stuff. I have bought lots of clear plastic containers to help with the move, which will be used afterwards in the garage for Neil's building materials - so he has no excuse not to PROPERLY organize them…yes you detected dig at dear hubby in the last comment, as Neil finds it hard to keep his tools organized. I love see through plastic containers. It makes it soooo much easier to find things and to keep things in the right place. Boxes eventually wear out and fall apart so I think good plastic containers are a great storage option that are worth the investment.

Not surprisingly I love the cleansing process that takes place when you go through literally every single belonging you own and decide whether to keep it, donate it or throw it away. There is always a surprisingly amount to move on – even if you are in the professional organizing industry like me!! Time just goes so fast and things you weren’t ready to get rid of in your last declutter now seem not to be relevant in your life – thank goodness! Otherwise if you have an emotional attachment to everything and this never wanes, then this is when hoarding can become an issue.

The thought of having a decent walk in wardrobe and garage again after renting for 4 years during the whole house planning and house building stage makes my heart sing. But even though we will have a lot more storage space I still intend on getting rid of as much unnecessary stuff as possible… I can already feel myself getting lighter!

If you are moving house soon my biggest tip is to make sure you keep items from various sections of the house together in boxes/containers and not mix them up (which is easy to do at the end of the packing process.) Pop things in separate bags instead of everything in boxes. Otherwise when you go to unpack you will have to think about each item and where it is supposed to be (especially the sorts of items that could go in one of a few places – you know the miscellaneous ‘stuff’ that could go in a hall cupboard/or laundry cupboard or kitchen drawer etc, and then end up having to go from room to room unnecessarily. This is a huge time saver in itself. What are you house moving tips to help keep the stress levels down and time packing/ unpacking to a minimum?? I would love to hear them.

Of course the other life save during our house moving experience is to lists, to do lists and more to do lists. It's a pretty darn long list when moving house and I don't know what i'd do without them. Our brains just aren't made to remember too much stuff!

Among a gazzilion other handy lists we have house moving tips and lists in our Organize Your Home eOrganizer. For more info about our Life Organizer go to our Life Organizing Website.

For more tips on keeping your house organized whether you are moving house or not, read this article on our website here.

Organize Your Life Herald Sun Press in Cheryl Critchley's Parenting Column

I was recently asked for a quote to go in an article, which appeared in yesterdays Herald Sun in Cheryl Critchley's Parenting Column & is Author of 'Unspoil Your Kids'. The title, was "Feeling off Colour?", in relation to food additives - which is close to my heart, as both my children are intolerant / allergic to lots of them!

I have written a short article on the topic (below) in relation to what has helped our family navigate the very confusing world of food additives; food preservatives; food labeling and food additive intolerances and allergies in general. I know first hand it can be stressfull nightmare, so I hope this helps you at the beginning of our food allergy diagnosis.

“Get Organized to keep nasty additives out of your life and shopping trolley”
By Claire McFee Author of Organize Your Life

Until my kids were diagnosed by a Naturopath with several food intolerances, I had no idea how many nasty’s were in the food we ate and the effects they were having on them. For a few years I struggled with which numbers I had to avoid when shopping and found it really hard to remember which ones were which. Thankfully a couple of things have turned this process into a ‘normal’ experience rather than an overwhelming one.

• Use an Additive Card when shopping
Thankfully along came Katy from Smart Snacks and her brilliant Additive Card that I could put in my purse and easily refer to when out and about. It makes your life so much easier!!! You can just circle the additives that you need to avoid – using a different colour pen for each family member.

• Use a Food Additive List
The other tip I recommend is using a List like we have on our Organize Your Life e-Organizer - to make a note of the additives and products in general that your family need to stay away from that you can use for shopping; with babysitters and for sleepovers at your friends’ places.

• Say goodbye to those Nasty Side Effects
I certainly don’t miss the behavioural issues we had pre-diagnosis that’s for sure! It makes you wonder how many kids are misdiagnosed with things like ADD when it could just be an additive or gluten intolerance/Allergy.

• Spread the word
Like me, be sure to tell your friends about your experience, so they can look into this as the possible cause of any issues they may be having. It is soooo much more common than people realize and we as consumers need to help spread the word to keep the pressure on the food companies and Government when it comes to what is allowed in our foods and how foods are labelled.

These things can make a huge difference to creating a less stressed life, by helping you pre-plan what your family puts into their mouths and prevent any of those nasty side effects.

If you have any questions in relation to you or your children's food allergy / diagnosis etc I would be happy to answer your questions and do my best to help.

till next time,

Forget New Years Resolutions and get ready for some Great 2010 Goals Now

Well we are nearly at the end of January, with Summer School holidays coming to an end here in Australia. After over a month already I am ready to get back into my normal routine - and not feel torn between work and the kids. It's been a great summer holiday but my thoughts are starting to focus more on the year ahead and what I want from it and what action i need to take to achieve those goals! That of course means getting these Goals 'down on paper' as they say - even though these days that just as often means typing into a computer file!

As I've said for years - New Years Resolutions invariably don't work due to the craziness of that time of year and holding off till February to get your goals happening is way more realistic and therefore achievable.

My goals have to do with streamlining the business further; outsourcing more; getting great new publicity for Organize Your Life etc. on the home front my goals have to do with having a smooth transition into our new house; to get the garden started etc, etc. What are you main Resolutions you want to achieve in the coming months.

go to our website for more articles on how to achieve your goals, step by step. You can do it!!

Organizing Deferred Payment and a great discount on New Furniture

Boring to some but exciting to us at the moment, with tens of thousands of dollars going towards the final stages of building our house every cent saved at the moment makes a big difference. So exciting to only be a few months away from moving into the new house after all this time! (it's been 4 years since we bought the block.)

Anyway, there are some amazing Furniture sales on at the moment, so I of course organized myself a trip into town to check them out - for the best possible discount of course.

A couch/sofa was specifically what we were after on this shopping trip, so that meant using the Butt Test - as our lovely Harvey Norman Salesman jokingly referred to it as! We sat in lots of couches and one couch surpassed all others in 'butt comfort'. A beautiful dark brown leather couch you could easily fall asleep in - Bliss.

Next thing was taking advantage of the finance packages on offer. Due to lower cash flow while Neil has been working on the house and huge expenses building the house -not having to dip into the house mortgage sounded pretty good. We were able to get an amazing deferred payment plan with www.gemoney.com where apart from a small monthly account keeping fee and set up charge, we don't have to pay a cent for ...wait for it... 33 months!!! Sounds too good to be true I know, but we have actually done this once before about 15 years ago when we were first starting out and it is all ligit.

As long as you pay the loan / deferred amount in full by the end of that time, you can save a fortune. If you don't pay the full payment out at the end, by being organized enough with your money and budgeting for the upcoming expense, that is when you get hit with exorbitant interest charges.

That said if careful it is a great way to buy items but not have to outlay for them upfront. I love it!!

Oh and I was also able to get another 5% discount off the 20% already being offered which is always a huge bonus with bug purchases. My husband really wanted an ottoman to put his feet up at the end of a long day and I really wanted a single armchair to curl up with a book in a sunlit corner but the price was ending up to more than we had budgeted, so I simply told the salesman that those two items weren't definite yet.

I said nicely :) - "Let me know if you can do a slightly better deal and I might be able to still buy it all"...So he went to the head boss and came back saying ok. So that was another huge win. the lesson here is that it can't hurt to ask - even when an item is already on sale. Have an organized approach to this and plan out what you are going to say before hand as this usually pays off.

So if you are in the market for some new household items try these shopping budget tips to get the best bargain and value for you dollar!

Retail Shop Therapy Brain Turn Around saves you Money & Guilt

Hopefully you spent wisely for Christmas and haven't overdone it by spending money you don't have. Read on to find out more about how the mind works when it comes to shopping / retail therapy...

How Retail shop therapy brain turn around saves you money & guilt....

Neuropsychologist David Lewis “Since the recession (due to the GFC) began, it has become apparent that shoppers are doing an about-face and turning away from purchases that once turned them on.”

Good news for your hip pocket – we are less likely to impulse spend and therefore regret it later emotionally and financially. Experts suggest there are a few reasons for this trend - Where in the past our brain allowed certain unhelpful chemicals to make buying decisions for us, through better awareness we are now more likely to let the more sensible chemicals win out, which is clearly the better way to go.....curbing your spending habits.

Shoppers are more aware than ever - due to growing popularity of environmental and social justice groups - that doing the right thing can have a huge personal and environmental and social knock on effect. We are then more likely to donate to worthy charities if we aren’t over stretched from unnecessary shopping purchases. We then feel better about ourselves emotionally and the less fortunate are better off, which is good all round!! Less stress, more money in our pocket and bank accounts. Win Win!

Quick tip , take a shopping list when shopping with what you NEED, not what you WANT or would like, and don't get anything if it's not on the list!!!

'Are you Spent?' ie: OVERWHELMED?!

I read a great article a while ago by journalist Maria Lally about the phenomenon of being "Spent". Being diagnosed as being 'Spent', basically means you are exhausted, overwhelmed and just running on empty.Sounds familiar anyone!?

A Book has even been written about it, by Dr Frank Lipman called "Spent? End exhaustion and feel great again."

Lipman had countless patients come to him who, even after a full 8 hrs sleep were tired and unable to achieve what they normally would in a day.

Lipman's research found that a big contributing factor - especially to women in the West, was not being in tune with Nature. Simply going to bed when it gets dark - yep - very early in Winter and getting up to natural sunlight in the morning, can make a massive difference to our sense of Wellbeing. Lipman goes onto say "Our DNA isn't in sync with Modern life, and our energy levels, sex drive, waist size and mood are paying the price."

Thankfully Lipman suggests some less extreme ways - apart from going to be at 5.30 over Winter (!) to get back in sync with nature and ourselves to be able to feel 'normal' again. These include but aren't limited to:-

* Going on a Technology Detox
- Daily exposure to phone (especially portable home phones, ot just mobiles) and computers overstimulates and affects our sleep patterns.

* Eat protein for Breakfast

* Deal with Bad Digestion (I have Lemon Juice every morning which helps kick start my otherwise problematic Digestive System.)

* Downsize your Workout

For more info you can check out his website @ www.spentmd.com

Cutting down on your 'stuff' can also lighten our mental load too, reducing the chances of becoming officially 'Spent'. Factoring in some all important 'Me Time' is also vitally important to your Wellbeing as well.

Personal Goal Setting

Goal Setting

Even if your Life Goals are only in your head and not on paper it is better than aimlessly going thru life with no real direction at all. However Studies do support that if you get your Goals down in writing, you are A LOT closer to achieving them. If you are a detailed oriented Goal-Setter - you are putting yourself way ahead of the pack. I know which type of person I'd prefer to be - do you?

That said, our Goals can sometimes change completely and ‘that’s ok’. Don’t beat yourself up if you change your mind about what you want at particlular stage of your life....change is inevitable in all areas of life, so just reassess your goals when necessary and go from there. As Dr. Timothy Sharp from the Happiness Institute says “There is much to be gained from journeys of self discovery”, and that reassessing and questioning were you are ‘at’ and where you want to be are a ‘constructive part of the process...just be conscious of focusing these questions on the positives.”

More on Goals...
Values and Personal Goal Setting

Creating time to get your Goals down on paper let alone implementing them takes organization – as it is all inextricably linked. To properly define what we want from life and how we can break that down into achievable goals takes time to reflect and assess where you are in relation to those goals.

Having core personal values that include respecting YOUR needs and wants, not just everyone elses will greatly influence your main Goal and breaking down of what you are able to achieve. So be conscious of allowing yourself the time to ponder ‘What's next?’ for you, as the more time you spend on this stage, the more time you will save in the execution stage. Psychologist Gemma Cribb, quoted for a Cleo article on this topic titled “The Life re-edit”, says we are often forced to contemplate our life direction when external circumstances change unexpectedly. Whether or not the contemplation you have is planned or unplanned, use your time well.

Assessing your 'Life Direction' it helps to focus on your true values. Cribb goes on to say, “Identify what’s meaningful to you in life and these values will become a reference point. Values are compass points, rather than definite goals ..regardless of other circumstances that are happening in your life.”

So have a think about where you are, where you want to be and whether you have been taking your personal values into account. They will help guide you, so keep them in mind! :)

How to cope when a family pet dies....

Our Golden Labrador Angel was hit by a car and was put down recently. It was really, really sad. The grief physically hurt for a few days but thankfully has dissipated. Pets really do become part of the family don’t they. The kids were just devastated by the loss of another pet so soon - our cat sparkles died unexpectedly less than a year ago. They cried and cried which was the hardest part for me. Not being able to take their pain away. I know that as part of the grieving process they needed to go though that on their own terms, but was heartbreaking to watch.

Emma verbalised her distress about what would happen in the future when she needed ‘time out’ from the rest of the family (i.e.: was upset with one or all of us about ‘whatever’) - who would she go to take her mind off things and get some affection and unconditional love from? It was an insightful thing to think and not one that we can ‘fix’ –at least not immediately. The loss of a pet can’t be solved overnight by getting another pet straight away. Sometimes it’s just too painful and you need time to heal first. That’s certainly how we feel. Angel was 3 ½ - so we had finally gotten her through the crazy young Labrador stage to the more sensible stage, making it all the more hard to accept her untimely death.

Having pets and inevitably losing them at some point –hopefully later rather than sooner - is all part of growing up and learning about responsibility and of course change and death. I encouraged the kids to write down their thoughts and do some drawings about Angel and their favourite memories of her – and what might be on a head stone if we had a proper one – i.e. RIP and what the means etc. We discussed burying her together, which as hard as it is to do is an important part of the grieving process. We went through this with Sparkles as well, so this wasn’t completely foreign to them. When we buried the cat they asked about the ‘how will she breath under the ground’ type questions and we had similar questions again from our 7 year old son about Angel..which of course leads to the ‘soul’ having already left the body and being in heaven so it’s ok…. Can be a bit of a hard concept to explain but is a good opportunity to discuss it all the same.

When a pet dies it’s also a good idea to put together a min-book of memories and photos of your beloved pet. Angel did some crazy naughty things that we remember fondly (in retrospect!!) and they will be lovely to have to look back on. We just hope the next pets we have will be around for longer than our last two that’s all!

How have you dealt with the death of a family pet? How did you help your children deal with the grieving process? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Join "The Story of Stuff" Community to help push for change in the world

Annie Leonard has done it again with a fabulous follow up to the brilliant mini-feature The Story of Stuff with The Story of Cap and Trade

If you don't know much or anything about the Carbon Trading Scheme; reduced target emissions etc then perhaps it's time you did and this is the best way I recommend to. :) As Annie Leonard (Founder of the Story of Stuff) succinctly says - the answers aren't going to come from the people that created the problem - conflict of interest anyone!??! - the solutions to the problems we are facing have to come from elsewhere.

The benefits of speaking up and joining forces with groups like these is a safer, cleaner, fairer world for ourselves and our children. No brainer don't you think!

There are more "The story of.." mini-features to follow The Story of Cap and Trade, so keep and eye out for them and join the over 9 million people who have already watched them. Help spread the world. Believe in People Power. I do. :)

Have you seen the Story of Stuff videos? What are your thoughts?
